The appeal of abstract photography....

....is that it challenges us to look at our surroundings in new, powerful ways. By focusing on certain details of color, composition, texture, and light, a photographer can give the viewer an ability to experience something new about the world they live in – an aspect they may have recognized, but never actually spent time examining.

That's what I love about these pictures of rock textures. They're not just rocks anymore!  The rich colors and complex surfaces create a truly fascinating subject for abstract photography.  

Abstract photography is technically defined as a photography that depicts a subject in a different way than it appears in the natural world. Of course, this could apply to a lot of photos!  In application, you can tell a good abstract photo by its striking details and strong design elements.

Some other common defining elements of abstract photography include:

• Greater focus on strong details, less focus on scenery or compositions
• Strong lighting concepts with dynamic contrasts and shadows
• Intriguing patterns or textures
• Commanding, eye-catching geometric shapes
• Vivid colors, or otherwise appealing color palettes

Although abstract art is confusing to a lot of people, abstract photography can be a little more accessible.  Even though the subjects pictured may look different in the photo, they're still part of the world around us. There are familiar details and recognizable objects, making abstract photography a little more simple and reassuring.

It can also be more fun for a photographer. Since the goal is to create a fascinating image rather than to accurately represent reality, there is some more room for creativity and artistic license. You can use filters and lighting effects to create different impressions, whether through photography techniques or a photo editing program like Photoshop. Some creative work in Photoshop can transform an uninteresting photo into a striking image. 

The best abstract photography is capable of evoking a strong response from the viewer, even if they aren't entirely sure what the subject of the photo is.  It creates a feeling, an impression, or a mood.
