How I am getting my camera to pay for my travel,
and how you can too....
While sitting on the top of the world after a hard climb I started thinking
to myself, “Of all the things that I do, what I really enjoy the most
is traveling to cool places, and taking pictures of the sights and scenes.”
I guess as you go through life every now and then you hit upon a revelation…this
was one of my revelation moments.
Through the years I have owned many different businesses;
I haven’t had a boss since I was in high school. I have owned a Bagel
Bakery, Flight School, Job Training Center, and invented a board game
called Wall Street….to name just a few. I am currently the co-founder
of a successful online business. Through the years I have gain valuable
business experience both offline, and more recently online. But, as
I found out that day, on the top of the world, what I really enjoy most
is traveling….And documenting the travels with my camera.
I thought long and hard about all of this, and
asked myself the question: “Would it be possible to use my camera to
generate a few extra dollars each year to pay for a trip?....Would it
be possible to write off the expenses?.....Could I earn enough to buy
a new lens? “
Having started a number of different businesses
over the past years, I have learned (the hard way) the questions to
ask when formulating the business idea. I then do some research, talk
to my accountant and lawyer, and share the ideas with a trusted group
whom I respect. Out of the haze the concepts either start to gel, or
the obstacles and viability become too obviously difficult to overcome.
For the ideas that start to gel, further investigation is done, and
eventually some of the ideas turn into viable businesses.
When I returned home from my hiking trip, I started
asking these “business formulating” questions. But this case was a little
different. I wasn’t looking to start a “full blown” business; I am already
busy with my current business. All that I really wanted to do was to
be able to earn enough with my camera to take an occasional trip. I
also wanted to be able to write off the expenses of my trip from my
taxes. This new business had to be very easy to keep up with, require
minimal time…and be fun to do.
After researching the idea, and developing a proof
of concept, I realized that I was on to something. My plan actually
worked! I reviewed the whole idea with my accountant, and he agreed
that yes, indeed I did have a viable business, and yes I would be able
to travel and pay for it with my camera! I was so happy……
In the process of researching my new business plan,
I wrote pages of notes. I told my friends about my new business – they
were intrigued and encouraged me to compile my notes into a readable
form….so that’s exactly what eventually developed. The only problem
was that my notes were just that: a bunch of notes. I knew what they
meant, but no one else could follow them. I didn’t really care as the
notes were for me.
My friends encouraged me to come up with a step-by-step
manual on how to set up a business so that they could do what I was
doing ….. I started in with such a manual. The end result is a 60 page
book that clearly walks one through the process.
I am now making my “manual” available for sale
on my web site. This is NOT a get-rich-quick manual…it most likely won’t
even earn enough money for you to quit your day job. If, however, you
would like to travel once, or maybe twice a year and pay for it with
your camera (and write it off your taxes), then this plan will probably
work for you.
The concepts are easy to follow and don’t take
a lot of time to implement – and the time you do spend on the project
is enjoyable. I am selling it for $19.95 – and encourage you to give
it a try….I am not promising you the world, but am offering realistic
proven plan to make your camera pay for some fun!
